Job Description
As a Senior Software Developer at Harris ERP, you write and review code every week, make sound architectural calls, and help lead a small team, including local and overseas developers, as we continue investing in and evolving our offerings.
This role reports directly to the VP of Research & Development and works closely with product, QA, TechOps and other teams across the Harris ERP portfolio.
**RESPONSIBILITIES**
Hands-On Engineering:
* Develop and execute strategies to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the Customer Support department, aligned with company objectives and customer needs.
* Collaborate with the VP of Operations to define operational goals, develop KPIs, and create roadmaps to achieve targets.
Technical Leadership:
* Design, build, and ship production code using modern Java frameworks and enterprise-grade engineering practices. You’ll be expected to stay in the codebase, not just review it.
* Own non-trivial pieces of the modernization effort end to end: from technical design through code review, testing, and production rollout.
* Make pragmatic architectural decisions that balance modernization goals against delivery timelines and the realities of a live, revenue-generating product.
Team Leadership & Collaboration:
* Provide day-to-day direction, coaching, and technical mentorship to a small team of local and overseas developers, setting priorities, unblocking work, and holding a consistent quality bar across time zones.
* Partner with the VP of R&D on staffing needs, performance feedback, and career growth conversations for your teammates; formal HR actions (hiring, compensation, formal reviews) are owned by the VP, with your direct input.
* Build working rhythms, async updates, documentation habits, and review cadences that make distributed collaboration with overseas developers effective.
AI-Enabled Delivery:
* Use, and help your team use, AI coding assistants and agentic tools as a standing part of your own workflow for scaffolding, refactoring, test generation, and code review.
* Identify where MCP-based tooling and AI agents can replace brittle flat-file integrations or manual operational work.
* Provide timely operational reporting to support ongoing validation of current and newly implemented processes.
**WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE**
After 6 Months:
* You've shipped meaningful, production-quality contributions to the codebase and understand the CitySuite platform well enough to make independent design calls.
* You've built a working relationship with the local and overseas developers on your team, with clear expectations and a review process everyone understands.
* You've identified at least one area of the platform ready for modernization and proposed — or implemented — its replacement.
After 12 Months:
* You own a meaningful slice of the platform in production — architecture, code quality, and operational health included.
* The patterns and standards you've set are visible in the team's code, and newer or outsourced developers are ramping up faster because of documentation and mentorship you've put in place.
* AI-assisted workflows are a normal part of how your team ships code, and you can point to concrete time saved or quality improved as a result.
**QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS - REQUIRED**
* A track record of designing and shipping production-grade backend services in Java or a comparable modern, statically-typed language. We care about what you've built, not a specific year count.
* Experience owning REST API design and integration work in a real production system.
* Experience providing technical direction or mentorship to other developers, formally or informally, including reviewing others' code and helping them grow.
* Comfort working directly with distributed or outsourced development teams across time zones, with strong async, written communication.
* Active, hands-on use of AI coding tools (e.g., Copilot, Claude Code, Cursor, or similar) as part of your regular development workflow.
* Solid grounding in relational database design and SQL.
**QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS - PREFERRED**
* Experience building software within an AI-Driven Development Life Cycle (AI-DLC), or contributing to a team that has adopted one.
* Direct experience with Quarkus, Jakarta EE, Hibernate, MapStruct, and/or Lombok.
* Experience modernizing or migrating a legacy Java monolith (Java EE, GlassFish, or similar) to a modern framework.
* Experience collaborating with a React front-end team or contributing to a React codebase.
* Background in ERP, GovTech, or other regulated/public-sector software.
* Familiarity with Model Context Protocol (MCP) or building AI-integrated tooling and agents.
* SQL Server experience specifically.
* Experience with Data-tier Application Package (DACPAC).
* Familiarity with Container Engines such as Podman, Docker or similar technologies.
**EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS**
* Post-secondary education in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience; we're flexible here if your project history speaks for itself.
* Demonstrated experience as a senior-level developer, including some exposure to guiding or mentoring other engineers.
* Ability to work core hours that overlap with both a US-based team and overseas developers.
**WHAT WILL MAKE YOU STAND OUT**
* Prior experience leading or mentoring outsourced/offshore developers specifically, not just distributed US teams.
* A past legacy-to-modern migration you can talk through in detail (what broke, what you'd do differently, how you kept the lights on during the transition).
* Contributions to internal tooling, libraries, or documentation that measurably improved a team's delivery speed.
* Curiosity about applying AI agents to problems beyond code generation, support tooling, data migration, testing, or operations.
**Salary range: $75,000 - $85,000 USD per year.**
