### About SEACC The Southeast Alaska Conservation Council (SEACC) is a small grassroots nonprofit based in Juneau, Alaska, surrounded by the Tongass National Forest. Since 1970, SEACC has been a regional conservation watchdog, defending the remaining intact old-growth forests and waters of Southeast Alaska. We partner with local communities, Tribes, businesses, and visitors to advocate for the conservation and sustainable use of our region’s natural resources, and preserve our uniquely Southeast Alaskan ways of life. Then you might be the right fit for our Staff Attorney position. ### Position Summary SEACC is seeking a motivated legal professional to join our team as a Staff Attorney. The title and scope of this position will be tailored to the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate. The salary range is intentionally broad to accommodate both early-career and more seasoned professionals. At least five years of experience is required to qualify for the upper end of the salary range. ### Position Summary: Staff Attorney This position reports to SEACC’s Executive Director and works closely with the Policy Analyst and campaign staff. The Staff Attorney will work independently and collaboratively with staff, community members, and partner organizations, including Alaska Native Tribes, commercial fishermen, business owners, local government officials, hunters, fishers, and other conservation groups. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced environment with hard-working colleagues. We are looking for someone who is innovative, creative, and passionate about Southeast Alaska. This role primarily serves as an analyst and commentator on a wide range of technical and legal documents and permit applications while leading SEACC’s participation in regulatory and permitting processes. The position emphasizes building strong legal and technical records rather than leading litigation and includes significant collaboration with outside attorneys, technical experts, and partner organizations. ### What You’ll Do In coordination with the SEACC team, you’ll further SEACC’s mission by: * Translating complex legal and regulatory issues into accessible materials for staff, partners, and the public. * Conducting legal research and analysis and preparing technical comments on proposed state and federal actions. * Drafting legal memoranda, FOIA requests, technical comments, and talking points. * Reviewing proposed timber sales, mining permits, and other conservation-related actions to identify emerging legal issues. * Tracking timelines for state and federal regulatory actions. * Managing research, document preparation, and public comment submissions to build a strong administrative record. * Ensuring SEACC preserves legal standing for potential future litigation. * Representing SEACC in agency proceedings, public hearings, and coalition meetings. * Reviewing and recommending potential litigation opportunities. * Guiding campaign strategy grounded in statute, regulation, and policy. * Assisting with litigation in coordination with outside counsel and partner organizations. ### Who You Are #### _Minimum Qualifications_ * Juris Doctor (JD) or LLM in Environmental Law. * Familiarity with and experience practicing environmental law. #### _Preferred Skills and Experience_ * Knowledge of the federal regulatory process, including NEPA, notice-and-comment rulemaking, and agency appeals. * Understanding of Alaska government and politics. * Strong commitment to SEACC’s conservation mission and Southeast Alaska communities. * Ability to work effectively in a small, fast-paced nonprofit environment. * Collaborative approach with both leadership and individual contributor experience. * Excellent legal research, writing, analysis, and communication skills. * Knowledge of federal and state legal procedures. * Admission to the Alaska Bar, or willingness and ability to obtain admission as needed. #### _Additional Qualifications That Are Beneficial_ * Experience with litigation in Alaska state or federal courts. * Knowledge of public lands law and Indigenous rights, including Free, Prior, and Informed Consent practices. * Experience working with Tribal governments or Indigenous rights issues. * Ability to connect day-to-day legal work with broader campaign and organizational strategy. _We know there is no single ideal candidate. The upper half of the range is intended for candidates with at least five years of experience in environmental law, administrative law, natural resource law, or related public interest practice. **Benefits include:** * Three weeks of paid vacation during the first year and four weeks after one year. * Eleven federal and state holidays. * Fully paid healthcare. * Twelve days of medical leave annually. * Two days of community service or civic participation leave. * 401(k) with a 5% employer match after one year. * Office closure between Christmas Day and New Year’s Day each year. **Location:** SEACC’s office is located in Juneau, Alaska. Preference is for candidates based in Juneau, but remote candidates located elsewhere in Alaska will be considered for the right candidate. Applicants must reside in Alaska or be willing to relocate. **Travel:** Some work-related travel is required, generally 1-3 trips per year.
